After 37 years leading FX Design Group, I am excited to share the journey of transforming a local operation into a nationally recognized, Emmy Award-winning design firm. Our work extended across scenic and lighting installations for broadcast, live events, theatre, opera, and ballet. This journey was defined by innovation, adaptability, and strategic thinking—qualities that were tested and proven through multiple crises, including 9/11, the 2008 recession, and the COVID-19 pandemic.
Reflecting on My Career at FX Design Group
When I first joined FX Design Group, it was a modest local business. Over the years, I had the privilege of leading a talented team of up to 75 designers, fabricators, and production specialists. We established key partnerships with major news organizations and event producers, delivering over 1,000 scenic and lighting design projects that consistently pushed the boundaries of creativity and technology. Our commitment to innovation led us to integrate cutting-edge technologies like virtual set design and AR/XR, ensuring consistent revenue growth even during challenging times.
Our efforts earned us multiple accolades, including Emmy Awards, Promax Awards, and Newscast Studio’s Broadcast Production Awards. I was personally honored with two Emmys and regularly shared our insights at industry conferences such as the NAB Show, Promax, and TV NewsTech.
Facing Challenges and the Decision to Exit
Despite our successes, the journey was not without challenges. Navigating the aftermath of global crises like 9/11 and the 2008 recession required resilience and adaptability. These experiences underscored the importance of building a business that could thrive independently of its owner. As I approached the latter stages of my career, I began to consider the future of FX Design Group and my role within it. The decision to exit the business was driven by a desire to ensure the company’s longevity and to explore new opportunities.
The realization that FX Design Group was thriving and could continue to do so without my direct involvement led me to pursue a strategic approach to the sale. My goal was to ensure a smooth transition and ongoing success under new ownership.
The Influence of “Built to Sell” and “Duct Tape Marketing”
During this period of reflection and planning, I turned to two influential books: “Built to Sell” by John Warrillow and “Duct Tape Marketing” by John Jantsch. These books provided invaluable insights into creating a sellable business and developing effective marketing strategies.
“Built to Sell” emphasizes the importance of creating a business that can operate independently of its owner. It outlines a process for developing a standardized service offering and a consistent delivery process—critical elements for building a business that attracts potential buyers. The book also highlights the need for a strong management team and diversified revenue streams, reducing reliance on any single client or the owner’s involvement.
“Duct Tape Marketing” offers a systematic approach to small business marketing. It advocates for a clear point of view and a turnkey marketing system that can be adapted to any industry or business size. The book stresses the importance of a consistent marketing message and building a strong brand that resonates with customers, which helps in attracting and retaining clients and contributes to long-term business success.
By integrating the strategies from these books into FX Design Group’s business model, I was able to prepare the company for a successful sale. The principles of creating a sellable business and a robust marketing system were instrumental in ensuring a smooth transition and continued growth. These strategies facilitated my exit on favorable terms and laid the groundwork for the next chapter of my career, where I now focus on mentoring other business owners to achieve their full potential.
